Inaugural All-Mountain West Conference Baseball Team Announced New Mexico's Alday and Sisk, BYU's Carson Capture Individual Honors. (5/15)

Colorado Springs, Colo. The Mountain West Conference announced its 2000 baseball all-conference teams and postseason awards today as selected by the league¹s head coaches. New Mexico junior third baseman Aaron Sisk was honored as the Player of the Year, while outfielder Matt Carson of BYU was named Freshman of the Year. Rich Alday of New Mexico was selected Coach of the Year. Regular-season champion New Mexico led the conference with eight overall selections, four on the first team and four on the second team. Utah, who tied for third place in the conference, placed the second-most players on the all-conference team with four, three on the first team and one on the second team. Second place San Diego State and third place BYU both have three honorees, while UNLV and Air Force have on each.
Sisk, a junior from Fort Worth, Texas (Arlington HS), led New Mexico to a
34-19 overall record and a 22-8 conference mark en route to its first
regular-season league title since 1985. Sisk leads the conference with 23
home runs on the year and entered this past week ranked third in the nation.
He also ranks atop the league in slugging percentage (.755), RBI (77), runs
scored (67), total bases (163) and walks (45).
Carson, a freshman outfielder from Yucaipa, Calif. (Yucaipa HS), started 49 of 50 games he played in and hit .397 on the year, a number that ranked third in the league. In Mtn. West games, he led the league with a blistering .450 batting average. Carson also had 15 doubles, eight home runs and a triple during his freshman campaign. Alday captured the third Coach of the Year honor in his 11 seasons at the helm of the New Mexico baseball program. He was named Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1992 and ¹95. Alday¹s tenure is tied for the second-longest in school history, behind only Vince Cappelli, who served for 13 years, and currently ranks No. 2 at UNM in career victories with a 322-296-2 record.
