Baseball Weekly Release: 5/14 SDSU claims first regular-season baseball championship since the 1990 season.
May 14, 2002 Air Force -- Senior Erik Fisher broke the Falcon career strikeout record of 278 set by Bob Wright in 1984 ... Fisher struck out three UNLV Rebels, May 12, and currently has 279 career strikeouts ... Fisher now has 13 strikeouts in his last two outings as he struck out a season-high 10 against San Diego State, May 5 ... The Falcons, 8-3 in their last 11 games, host Utah in the final conference series of the season this week ... The Utes swept Air Force earlier this season. BYU -- There have been 20,579 fans in 13 games at Larry H. Miller Field thus far for an average of 1,583 compared to 17,378 in 14 games for an average of 1,241 last year when BYU ranked 38th in the NCAA for attendance ... Ranger Wiens continues to be a hot bat for the Cougars after hitting .545 last week ... As a team, BYU is hitting .309 -- its highest season average since Jan. 25 ... BYU hosts New Mexico this week after having won seven of the last eight vs. the Lobos.
New Mexico -- The Lobos have scored double figures in six of their last nine games and continue to rank in the nation's top 20 for scoring this season ... UNM is also third in the nation for batting average at .347 ... Josh Mader hit a sizzling .692 with six RBI for the Lobos last week vs. San Diego State and has been steady from the plate the second half of the conference season with a team-best .447 average and 14 RBI ... With 98 strikeouts, James Vermilyea is on pace to become just the fourth MWC pitcher in the three-year history of the league to top 100 strikeouts in a season.
San Diego State -- The Aztecs clinched their first MWC title and first overall conference title since 1990 with a pair of victories over New Mexico last week ... Second baseman Carlo Cota hit .643 last week vs. the Lobos, while catcher Brian Manfred and shortstop Taber Lee each topped .500 for the series ... As a team, SDSU hit .456 and racked up 41 runs in the three-game set ... SDSU travels to UNLV to close out the regular season this week ... The Aztecs swept the Rebels at home earlier this season and have won eight of the last 10 vs. UNLV. UNLV -- First baseman Eric Nielsen paced the Rebels last week with a .692 batting average along with nine RBI as he helped UNLV to a 2-1 record ... Nielsen has a team-high .349 batting average for the season ... Robbie Van recorded his first complete game victory of the season last week and has now won five straight outings for the Rebels ... UNLV hosts San Diego State to close out the regular season. Utah -- The Utes hit .403 as a team vs. BYU last week en route to a 2-1 record ... Freshman centerfielder Matt Ciaramella hit .714 with three doubles and a triple, while first baseman Nate Weese and third baseman Mike Westfall each hit .500 ... Mitch Maio recorded his league-leading ninth victory of the season and maintained his lead in ERA among MWC pitchers at 3.67 ... Utah visits Air Force this week to wrap up the regular season. |
