Player and Pitcher of the Week

New Mexico's Stovall and BYU's Jacinto take home conference honors.

April 19, 2004

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico freshman first baseman Daniel Stovall and BYU senior righthander Paul Jacinto were named the Mountain West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Stovall, from Midland, Texas (Midland HS), belted three home runs and three doubles last week, while helping the Lobos to a three-game sweep at Air Force. In game one, Stovall was 4-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored. He went 5-for-6 with two home runs, five RBI and two runs in game two, and followed in game three with an RBI after going 3-for-5 from the plate. For the week, Stovall hit .800 (12-for-15) with seven RBI and a slugging percentage of 1.600. Stovall is third in MWC contests with a .438 batting average.

Jacinto, from Encinitas, Calif. (LaCosta HS), recorded a win and a save last week as he helped the Cougars take two of three games in the series from San Diego State. In Thursday's 7-6 victory in 11 innings, Jacinto entered the game with the bases loaded in the sixth inning and allowed just one earned run and five hits over 5 and 2/3 innings. He walked none and struck out four, including two Aztec batters in the 10th with runners on base. Jacinto earned a save in Saturday's series finale vs. the Aztecs as he entered the game with a one-run lead and runners on first and second with no outs in the ninth inning, but preserved the win after facing two batters.
