THIS WEEK IN THE MWC No. 28 TCU (23-9, 7-1 MWC) maintained its lead in the leauge standings, while San Diego State (21-14, 6-2 MWC) remains one game back and BYU (19-13, 6-3 MWC) took sole possession of third place. In non-conference action, BYU hosts a two-game series vs. Washingtonon Tuesday and Wednesday while San Diego State takes on Loyola Marymount and TCU battles Baylor on Tuesday. MWC QUICK HITS BYU -- BYU went 4-0 last week, including a sweep of UNLV in MWC play...The sweep of the Rebels was the first for the Cougars in league action at home since 2005 against Air Force and Utah...BYU drew 4,412 fans to Larry H. Miller Field for the UNLV series...Senior Apana Nakayama and sophomore Kasey Ko each had two game-winning RBI last week.
New Mexico -- New Mexico was swept by San Diego State in a three-game conference series last week...Senior Daniel Stovall hit .385 (5-for-13) vs. the Aztecs, extending his hitting streak to 18 games in the process...The streak is a career-best for Stovall and ties for the longest streak of any active Lobo, matching junior Jordan Pacheco's 18-game streak set last season...Stovall's hit streak is also currently tied for the seventh-longest in the nation...After snapping a 13-game homerless skid two weeks ago vs. the Aztecs, the Lobos hit four last weekend. San Diego State -- San Diego State swept New Mexico in league play last week, marking its first three-game sweep over the Lobos since the 2003 season...In his first action since Mar. 1, junior left-hander Donnie Hume gave up four hits and two earned runs in 4.0 innings on the mound...Freshman Stephen Strasburg collected his first win as a collegiate in SDSU's 6-5, 10-inning win on Friday...The Aztecs had a season team- and conference-high 24 hits in the final game of the series. TCU -- No. 28 TCU went 2-1 on the road last week, losing at then-No. 18 Oklahoma before going 2-0 at Air Force in MWC action...Senior Austin Adams stroked two homers in game two vs. the Falcons, marking his third career multi-homer game...The Horned Frogs have tallied 10 or more hits in a game 22 times this season, including 14 of their last 15 contests...Sophomore Ben Carruthers and senior Steven Trout are both currently riding six-game hitting streaks, while junior Bryan Kervin has collected at least one hit in five straight games. UNLV -- UNLV was swept by BYU last week...The sweep marked just the third time since the 2002 season that the Rebels dropped all three games to a MWC opponent...UNLV lost the first two games, 14-3 and 5-3, respectively...Those two games marked the 24th time that the Rebels have been in a game decided by two runs or less this season...UNLV is 10-14 in those contests. Utah -- Utah went 3-1 in non-conference action vs. Utah Valley State last week...Junior Jesse Shriner doubled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth for a walk-off 10-9 Ute win on Thursday...It was the second consecutive game in which Shriner delivered a walk-off hit...After losing 18-1 last Friday, the Utes outscored UVSC 32-2 in Saturday's doubleheader...The 18 runs allowed by Utah in the loss were a season-high...Overall, the Utes have scored in double figures nine times this season and are 8-1 in those games...Senior Jay Brossman saw his 15-game hitting streak snapped last week, while sophomore Corey Shimada had a 13-game hit streak stopped. |
