MWC Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week

BYU's Arrhenius and Hughes take home conference honors.

May 13, 2002

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU sophomore Daniel Arrhenius and senior Nikki Hughes have been selected as the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively.

MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Daniel Arrhenius - BYU
Sophomore - Throws - Orem, Utah/Mountain View HS

Arrhenius won the discus with a season-best throw of 177'-7" (54.13 meters) at the Utah Collegiate Championships last weekend. The mark is currently the best in the MWC this season and ranks fifth on the league's all-time list.

WOMEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Nikki Hughes - BYU
Senior - Jumps - Mesquite, Nev./Utah Valley State College

Hughes recorded a lifetime best 21'-7.50" (6.59 meters) en route to winning the long jump at the Utah Collegiate Championships. Her mark is not only the best jump in the conference this season by more than a foot and a half, but is tied for the top mark in the country with Auburn's Elva Goulbourne. The 21'-7.50" is also a new MWC all-time record, breaking the old mark of 21'-6" set by Kirsten Bolm of BYU in April 2000.
