Wyoming's Gervais and BYU's Jackson Named McLeodUSA Mtn. West Track and Field Athletes of the Week

Both break their own school records. (5/9)

May 9, 2000

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Wyoming junior Jason Gervais and BYU senior Becky Jackson were named McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for their performances last weekend.

Gervais, a native of Timmons, Ontario, Canada, earned three first-place finishes at the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque last weekend. In the process, he broke his own school record, established a season-high and eclipsed a stadium record. Gervais earned first in the shot put with a mark of 63' 11.5", which broke his own school record. In the hammer throw, he had a throw of 217' 3", which is a season-high and the best in the league by more than eight feet. Gervais finished his day with a first-place finish in the discus with a mark of 203-6, a New Mexico Track and Field Stadium record.

Jackson, a senior from Salt Lake City, won the pole vault competition at the BYU Tri-Meet in Provo, Utah, last weekend. Her mark of 12' 9.5" broke her own school record by nearly three inches, which she had established in 1998. The vault ranks as the 15th-best in the nation and is a conference-best mark by more than three inches.

Last Week's Winners: CSU senior Casey Malone and Wyoming senior Robyn Lyons
