UNLV's Davis to Compete at U.S. Indoor Nationals

Rebel sprinter will showcase her talents with the best in the world. (3/3)

March 3, 2000

UNLV track and field star Michele Davis will see how she matches up against the best in the world this weekend as she competes in the U.S. Indoor Nationals at the Georgia Dome on Friday, March 3 and Saturday, March 4.

Davis, who won a Mountain West Conference title in the 400 meters last Saturday, will use the competition to improve her NCAA provisional qualifying time of 54.26.

"Any time you run against faster competition, you increase your chances of clocking a better time," UNLV head coach Karen Dennis said, who believes Davis needs to trim another second off her time to receive an invite to the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., on March 10-11.

Davis has already posted provisional qualifying times in both the 200 and 400 meters this season. She ranks 19th in the 200 and 20th in the 400, her primary event. The NCAA decides how many competitors it will take to fill in the field for each event at the Indoor Championships, usually between 15 and 18 people.

If she receives an invite, Davis will join teammates Jessica Marable and Ayanna Hutchinson at the NCAAs. Marable ranks fourth in the nation in the shot put and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships last week. Hutchinson is still only a provisional qualifier, but ranks third in the 60 meters and 17th in the 200.
