BYU Wins Men's and Women's Inaugural Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships

Wyoming men and UNLV women finish in second-place. (2/26)

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU captured both the Men's and Women's team titles at the inaugural Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships held on the campus of the Air Force Academy.

The BYU men finished with a total 193 points, 51 points ahead of second-place Wyoming (142) and Colorado State (142). Air Force placed fourth with 111, followed by Utah (36) and New Mexico (26). On the women's side, BYU tallied 229 total points to win the championship, 137.5 points better than second-place UNLV (91.50). San Diego State finished third with 89, followed by Colorado State (85), Wyoming (82.5), New Mexico (39), Utah (32) and Air Force (15).

In the Men's Triple Jump, Wyoming sophomore Quincy Howe took the title with a distance of 15.45 meters. Teammate Mervin Swaby, a sophomore, claimed second with a mark of 15.40 meters, followed by BYU junior Rick Madsen at 14.81 meters. For the women, BYU junior Kristel Berendsen captured first with a jump of 12.75 meters. New Mexico sophomore Monique Harris finished second at 12.12 meters, followed by Wyoming junior Tomeca Brown at 12.07.

 

 

Wyoming junior Jason Gervais, winner of the Men's Weight Throw, also captured first in the Shot Put with a throw of 19.68 meters. He edged out BYU junior Jim Roberts who finished second with a mark of 19.64 meters. Wyoming senior Jason Hammond finished third at 18.42 meters. On the women's side, UNLV senior Jessica Marable earned first with a throw of 16.56 meters. Colorado State junior Liz Toman followed at 15.85 meters and BYU junior Becky Beachler finished third with a mark of 15.82.

In the Men's Pole Vault, BYU senior Alan Gulledge took first with a mark of 5.30 meters. Air Force senior Jake Gensic finished second at 5.20 meters, followed by BYU sophomore Jeremy Kemp at 5.10.

BYU senior Jeana Bingham earned first in the Women's High Jump with a height of 1.81 meters, followed by Colorado State junior Liz Toman and UNLV freshman Tianika Sharrieff.

In the Men's 60-Meter Dash, Colorado State junior Drew Smith captured first with a time of 6.73. Wyoming sophomore Mervin Swaby and junior Carlington Duncan finished second and third, respectively, with marks of 6.79 and 6.81. For the women, UNLV senior Ayanna Hutchinson cruised to first with a time of 7.28. San Diego State junior Promise Mose finished in second at 7.52 and edged out Colorado State senior Brandi Bernert who finished at 7.53.

BYU senior Randy Himes won the 60-Meter High Hurdles with a time of 7.95. Air Force senior Matt Puckett finished in second at 8.09, followed by BYU junior Slade Combs at 8.11. BYU senior Kirsten Bolm took home first on the women's side with a time of 8.20. San Diego State senior Felicia Stone finished second at 8.31, followed by teammate Marisa Robinson, a senior, at 8.48.

In the 200-Meter Dash, BYU junior Thobias Akwenye cruised to first with a time of 21.17. Wyoming junior Carlington Duncan followed at 21.31 and Colorado State junior Drew Smith finished third at 21.49. On the women's side, UNLV senior Ayanna Hutchinson, the 60-Meter champion, took first with a time of 23.99. Teammate Michele Davis, a sophomore, finished in second at 24.05. New Mexico freshman Adwoa Gyasi-Nmako finished in third at 24.08.

Air Force senior Kevin Griswold captured first in the Men's 400-Meter Dash with a time of 47.48. New Mexico senior Ian Stewart took second at 48.22, followed by Wyoming junior Seth Billy at 48.41. For the women, UNLV sophomore Michele Davis took the gold with a mark of 54.26. BYU sophomore Holly Gibbons finished in second at 55.19, followed by teammate Milena Alver, a senior, at 56.13.

In the 800-Meter Run, Colorado State freshman Ben Marvin led the field with a time of 1:53.78. BYU senior Andrew Sorenson finished in second at 1:54.45, followed by CSU sophomore Jon Fowler at 1:54.90. BYU senior Lindsay Nadauld took the women's event with a time of 2:13.32. Teammate Susan Taylor, a senior, finished in second-place at 2:13.71. Colorado State senior Jeanie Crist followed at 2:14.13.

The Men's Mile Run title was captured by Utah junior Teren Jameson with a time of 4:14.60. BYU sophomore Dula Parkinson finished second at 4:16.30, followed by Air Force junior Joe Lopez at 4:17.56. For the women, the top three spots were captured by BYU. Junior Tara Haynes finished in first with a time of 4:58.41, followed by sophomore Sherida Rogers at 5:00.33 and junior Jolee Gillespie at 5:02.54.

In the 3,000-Meter Run, Utah senior Chris Merkley grabbed first with a time of 8:34.59. He was followed by Wyoming senior Joe Hall at 8:39.86 and BYU junior John Hedengren at 8:49.28. BYU took home the top three places for the women again. Junior Sharolyn Shields led the way at 9:51.70. She was followed by junior Elizabeth Jackson at 9:58.38 and sophomore Laura Heiner at 10:13.18.

In the Men's Mile Relay, Wyoming captured first with a time of 3:13.74. BYU finished in second with a time of 3:14.34, followed by New Mexico at 3:19.11. BYU took the women's title with a time of 3:49.49. UNLV followed at 3:50.56 with New Mexico in third at 3:50.84.

The Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field individual honors were presented at the conclusion of the championships and are listed below.
