CSU Season Preview John Mattos is entering his 25th year as head coach at Colorado State and has lined up a full season of competition for the Rams.
Oct. 21, 2004 John Mattos is entering his 25th year as head coach at Colorado State and has lined up a full season of competition for the Rams. They will have 10 dual meets and attend the Rice Invitational and the US Open as well. The team will split their squad for several meets this season, including the Northern Colorado Dual, the US Open, and the Air Force Dual. This season is unique for the Rams because the newcomers to the team outnumber the upperclassmen. This is not a bad thing because the new group has been pushing the upperclassmen in practices, forcing them to practice at an even higher level. They will help add depth across the board as the team aims its sights to be regular dual meet season champions and MWC Champions. Returning Seniors... This year there are six seniors leading the team. Last season, four of these seniors competed in the MWC Championships. Lindsey McCaslin made the Second-Team All-MWC team in the 100
breaststroke where she finished 6th. She also swam season bests in the
200 breaststroke, and 200 IM. McCaslin also swam on the first place 200
medley relay team.
Sarah DeLapp swam to 14th in the 1650 freestyle on the final day of the MWC with a season best of 17:34.70. DeLapp also swam the 400 IM and 500 freestyle. Seda Ozdemir, Shelley Aspevig and Amber Canterbury ended the season swimming season bests in their individual events at the MWC. Kara Crisp placed 13th in 1-meter diving and 3-meter diving with a score of 199.55 and 357.05, both of which were the second highest scores for the Rams this season. Crisp was also 12th in platform diving with a score of 267.05. She contributed 13 points for the Rams. Megan Trucco had a third place finish on both the 3-meter and 1-meter against Utah last season. This Weekend... CSU will host the 24th annual Early Bird Invitational at the Edora Pool and Ice Center (EPIC) on October 22-23, 2004. CSU has invited six men's teams, including Air Force Academy, Wyoming, University of Denver, Colorado School of Mines, Metro State University, and University of Colorado. There will be 8 women's teams participating, including the Rams, Wyoming, University of Denver, Colorado School of Mines, Metro State University, University of New Mexico, University of Colorado and University of Nebraska-Kearney. The meet begins Friday night at 5pm and continues with two sessions on Saturday starting at 9 am and 2 pm. The diving competition will begin on Friday and continue on Saturday morning. Colorado State has won the Invitational for the last 5 consecutive years. Start With A Name... The Rams have had a swimmer named Mountain West swimmer of the week in the first week of every season since the inception of the Conference. |
