Swimming Program Noted For Academics

Men's team 16th in the country; women 54th.

July 7, 2004

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV swimming and diving program earned high marks for academics as the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) put out its annual academic rankings.

UNLV's men's team was 16th in the country with a 3.08 team grade point average, while the women were 54th with a 3.17 GPA.

Adam Martinson led the men's program with a GPA of 3.7, which is the second highest overall for all male student-athletes at UNLV. Martinson was also voted team captain for 2004-05 and won the 200 back at the Mountain West Conference Championships with a school record of 1.45.97, which missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships by two-tenths of a second.

"We are lucky to have strong leaders like Adam on our team and we are excited about our strong incoming freshman class, which we hope will keep up our high academic standards," UNLV head coach Jim Reitz said. "It is our philosophy that to be successful in the pool you must live a well-rounded lifestyle. Our swimmers not only strive to be great athletes but great students while living a lifestyle conducive to those ambitions."
