2003-04 Swimming Season in Review Utah completes its best season in recent history
Feb. 23, 2004 MEN: The University of Utah men's swimming and diving team completed its best season since 1995. Utah finished the regular season with a 7-1 overall record, 3-1 in MWC competition. The Utes finished second in the conference standings after earning seven straight wins before losing to nationally-ranked BYU in the final meet of the season.
At the 2004 Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, Utah finished fourth with 583 points. The Utes would have finished second at the championships had they not been disqualified in the 400 medley relay. Evan Castro set a new school record in the 100 breast (54.39). Sterling Richards was awarded the 2003-04 MWC Men's Diver of the Year and Rachel Degener earned the 2003-04 Men's Diving Coach of the Year honors.
WOMEN: The Utah women's swimming team finished the season 9-2 overall and its 6-1 record in MWC competition earned the Utes a share of the conference crown for the first time in the history of the program. Utah tied for the regular season championship with Colorado State. During the regular season, the Utes rolled to a 6-0 start in the conference before losing to BYU. When Utah beat Colorado State 128-109 on Jan. 17, it was the first time they had beaten the Rams under Head Coach Michael Litzinger. At the 2004 MWC Championships, Utah placed fourth with a team total of 499 points. The Utes set three new school records at the meet. The 200 medley relay team of Leah Jensen, Tessa Greegor, Meghan Demchuk and Amy Barefield set a school record with a time of 1:43.39. Rachel Curci set a new school record, winning the 1650 free (16:43.05) and Marissa Martin set a school record in the 200 back (2:02.02).
