BYU Wins Inaugural Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships UNLV places second in both men's and women's competitions. (2/19)
Feb. 19, 2000 OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - BYU captured both the Men's and Women's team titles at the inaugural Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships held at the Aquatic Center on the campus of Oklahoma City Community College. The BYU men finished with a total 818 points, 131 points ahead of second place UNLV (687). Air Force placed third with 679, followed by Wyoming (544) and Utah (512). On the women's side, BYU tallied 715.50 total points to win the championship, 48 points better than second-place UNLV (667.50). Colorado State finished third with 531.50, followed by Wyoming (476), Utah (432), San Diego State (316), New Mexico 250.50 and Air Force (246).
UNLV sophomore Tera Sherard won the women's 1650 Freestyle with a time of 17:03.26. Jen Rice, a senior from Wyoming, finished second with 17:07.54, followed by senior teammate Jessica Schiffl in third at 17:17.36.
In the men's 1650 Freestyle, Robert Renna, a senior from Utah, placed first with a time of 15:39.98. Air Force freshman James McCroan came in second at 15:49.51, while UNLV sophomore Michael Soira finished third in 15:52.65. San Diego State sophomore Meghan Casillan captured her second individual title in as many days with a 2:01.08 in the 200 Backstroke. Colorado State junior Sandy Leaycraft placed second at 2:01.71, and UNLV sophomore Ashleigh Crowder came in third at 2:02.93. Arunas Savikas, a BYU junior, earned first place honors in the men's 200 Breaststroke with a time of 1:45.60. Freshman teammate Gary Tan placed second in 1:48.58 and Air Force sophomore Matt Horner claimed third with a time of 1:49.00 Stand-out sophomore Lorena Diaconescu of UNLV took first place in the women's 100 Freestyle with a time of 50.09, followed by Utah junior Heidi Hausknecht at 51.27 for second and BYU senior Jann Pickens at 52.33 for third. In the men's 100-Yard Freestyle, Air Force junior Charlie Toth earned first place honors with a time of 44.45. UNLV's Piotr Kryskow placed second in 44.63, edging out Utah senior Johan Nystrom, who placed third at 44.64. The women's 200-Yard Breaststroke individual title went to BYU junior Jennifer Tasker with a time of 2:18.42. UNLV junior Carrie Knopp took second with a time of 2:19.59, while Colorado State senior Nicole Ryan placed third at 2:19.82. Air Force junior Matt Ihlenfeld grabbed first place in the men's 200-Yard Breaststroke in 2:00.47. Drew Watkins, a freshman from BYU, finished second with 2:02.60, followed by BYU senior John Lowry in third at 2:02.67. The UNLV women swept the 200-Yard Butterfly with freshman Whitney Phelps taking first with a time of 2:02.30, junior Sabrina Ferrari claiming second with 2:02.87, and sophomore Dana Penn coming in third with 2:03.33. The men's 200-Yard Butterfly individual title went to UNLV sophomore Jacint Simon with a 1:47.99. Wyoming freshman Jake Weidert captured second in 1:48.52, while Utah senior Matt Chamberlain placed third in 1:48.65. Crystal Gregory, a Utah sophomore, claimed the women's platform diving title with a total score of 363.25. BYU senior Rachelle Kunkel came in second with 347.90, followed by Utah senior Kristy Mayo in third with 301.50. On the men's side, Olympic hopeful and Wyoming sophomore Oscar Delgado totaled 446.80 points for top honors. BYU freshman Aaron Russel took second with 433.45, while sophomore teammate Viraj Patil placed third with 415.35 points. The UNLV women won the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 3:25.56. BYU picked up second at 3:26.24 and Colorado State took third with 3:30.22. The UNLV men led the way in the 400-Yard Freestyle relay with time of 2:56.79, followed by Air Force at 3:00.19 and BYU at 3:01.59. The Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving individual honors were presented at the conclusion of the championships and are listed below.
