2004 MWC Championships Underway

BYU men and women lead after first day of action.

OKLAHOMA CITY - Four-time defending conference champion BYU leads the men's and women's field with 110 and 108 points, respectively, after day one at the Mountain West Conference Swimming & Diving Championships at Oklahoma City Community College.

Utah trails the Cougars in men's action with 109 points, followed by Wyoming (99), Air Force (85) and UNLV (70). The Rams hold the No. 2 spot in the women's events with 99 points, followed by New Mexico (96), Wyoming (89), UNLV (77), Utah (62), Air Force (50) and San Diego State (46).

Day two events begin Thursday, Feb. 19, with preliminary events at 10 a.m. CST and finals competition at 6 p.m. The MWC Swimming & Diving Championships conclude Saturday, Feb. 21, following the 6 p.m. finals events and the announcement of the individual and team awards.

MWC Swimming & Diving Championships Notes:

  • UNLV set a new MWC and school record in the men's 200-yard medley relay (1:28.64). The Rebels captured their fourth title in the event in five years (2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004).

  • Colorado State captured its third women's 200-yard medley relay in five years (2000, 2003 and 2004). They were the runner up in 2001 and 2002.

  • New Mexico's Becca Barras won her second consecutive title in the 1-meter diving event.

  • BYU captured its fourth men's 800-yard freestyle relay title in five years (2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004).

  • Colorado State set a new MWC Championships record in the women's 800-yard freestyle relay (7:22.80).
