OXFORD, Ohio - Powered by a one-two finish from sophomore Andrea Kremer (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) and junior Kristen Fryburg (Dayton, Ohio/Kettering Alter), Miami University's women's cross country team got the season off to a strong start, edging Ball State University by one point for the Miami Invitational Title.
Miami, which won the event for the eighth time in its 17-year history, totaled 48 points to finish ahead of Ball State's 49 and the University of Michigan's 54. Michigan had entered the meet ranked No. 24 nationally. Kremer cruised to an 18:04 clocking in capturing the first-place finish, while Fryburg, who won the event in 1999, claimed second in her first cross country appearance since the 1999 NCAA Championships.
Liz Lundgren (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) bolstered an already strong RedHawk showing with a sixth-place finish in 18:41. Other runners scoring for the RedHawks included Kylee Studer (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton), who finished 20th in 19:36, and Meredith Magsig (Elmore, Ohio/Woodmore), who finished 22nd in 19:38. Kristin Wrede (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Sarah Bertolini (Louisville, Ohio/St. Thomas Aquinas) each notched top 30 finishes, placing 26th and 29th, respectively.
On the individual side, Kremer and Fryburg were followed by Ball State's Stacey Ritz (18:21), Wright State University's Jessica Kuhr (18:25) and Ball State's Katie Nowak (18:34). Wright State, Youngstown State and the University of Louisville rounded out the top five teams, finishing third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
Miami returns to action next Saturday when it hosts the Miami Fall Classic.
