YPSILANTI, Mich - Miami's quest for a 12th Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championship began in fine fashion Thursday morning in Ypsilanti, Mich., as a total of 12 swimmers in three events qualified for the finals. Ohio, the RedHawks' main competition, placed 13 in Thursday's evening's final heats.

Leading the way was senior Emily Nayes (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie), whose third-place time of 2:04.14 in the 200 individual medley hit the NCAA "B" Standard and set a school record. The old mark of 2:04.43 was set by Tracy Edmister in 1990. Freshman Trisha Lamb (Oregon, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) also made the finals in the 200 IM after finishing sixth in the preliminaries with a 2:07.18 clocking, while junior Heather Kelley (Milwaukee, Wisc./Divine Savior Holy Angels) qualified for the "B" Final by coming in 11th.

Finishing first, lowering her MAC-season-best time by .33 seconds and hitting the NCAA "B" Standard in the 50 free was senior Kelly Janura (Barrington, Ill./Barrington), with a time of 23.33. Senior Colleen Rambasek (Kettering, Ohio/Alter), the 1999 MAC champion in the event, snuck into the "A" Final by virtue of her eighth-place finish.

The "B" Final will have a pair of RedHawks in it as well, as junior Jackie Hiltman (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and freshman Christel Frantz (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) captured 10th and 15th, respectively.

The RedHawks' best event was the 500 free, as they packed four swimmers into the top six spots. Sophomore Amy Miranda (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy), freshman Michelle Reynolds (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming), freshman Cara Magee (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) and sophomore Elizabeth Roble (Englewood, Colo./Kent) took first, second, fourth and sixth, respectively, in the preliminary heats. Sophomore Katie Scott (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) will swim in the "B" Final after placing 16th with a time of 5:06.16.
