Head softball coach Angie Jacobs has announced the addition of assistant coach Dawn Wuthrich to her coaching staff for the 2004 season. Wuthrich arrives at Miami from Howard College in Big Spring, Texas, where she has served as head softball coach for the past two seasons.
"I couldn't be happier about the quality of person and coach that the Miami program is gaining," said Jacobs. "This addition raises the bar at Miami and helps raise the bar in the Mid-American Conference."
A native Texan, Wuthrich joins the Red and White staff after spending the past two years directing Howard College to a 78-38-1 record. She took Howard College to the National Junior College Athletic Association Regional Playoffs both years as well as earning 2002 Conference Co-Coach of the Year honors, after her team was Conference Co-Champs that season.
Prior to arriving at Howard College in 2001, Wuthrich spent five years at Leander Independent School District in Leander, Texas, spending her tenure as a head varsity softball coach and teacher. Wuthrich's teams were District Champions and went to the area playoffs in three of her five years.
In 1994, Wuthrich was selected as a National Team Finalist for the USA Olympic Softball Team. In addition to her teaching and coaching duties at Leander High School, Wuthrich played four years in the Women's Professional Softball League (WPSL) as a member of the Tampa Firestix (1997), Virginia Roadsters (1998), Carolina Diamonds (1999) and the league-champion Florida Wahos (2000). While she was with the Diamonds, she set the single-season stolen base record with 26 stolen bases.
As a college player at Texas A&M, Wuthrich started as an outfielder or catcher all four years. She earned first team all-region outfielder honors her junior year and was a team co-captain her senior year. She also earned the GTE Academic Athlete Award all four years. Wuthrich errorless game streak of 172 still stands in the NCAA record books as tied for the lead.
Wuthrich's coaching experience also includes numerous summer camps for universities such as Texas A&M, Southwest Texas, University of Texas at Arlington, as well as for the Chicago White Sox and various local high schools. She also was involved with camps/clinics as a member of the WPSL.
Bianca Paz, an incoming sophomore infielder, will be joining Wuthrich from Howard Junior College, as Paz committed to play for the RedHawks on March 3, 2003.
In addition to her overall day-to-day responsibilities as a coach, Wuthrich's specialization will include working with the outfield, bunting/slapping, base running and the team's recruiting coordinator.
"Dawn's knowledge and experience will help Miami continue to turn the program around," said Jacobs. "After such a great finish for Miami last season, I believe that Dawn will help take Miami to the next level."
Wuthrich received her bachelor of science degree in kinesiology from Texas A&M in 1993.
