BACK AT HOME IN OXFORD FOR A THREE-GAME STAND: A shutout of Southwest Missouri State last weekend in Louisville, Ky., has the Miami field hockey team geared up for its return home this weekend when it hosts Mid-American Conference foes Ball State and Central Michigan. The RedHawks open their three-game homestand with Ball State on Friday, Oct. 15, at 3 p.m. and then Central Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m.

MORE FIRST TIMERS: Yet another RedHawk found the back of the net for the first time in their career last weekend when freshman Taylor Florence (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) joined the growing list of Miami players to score their first career goal this season. Prior to Florence, sophomore Deb Leighton (Encinitas, Calif./LaCosta Canyon) became the fifth Miami player to score her first career goal when she netted a marker against Ohio on Oct. 1.

ANOTHER SHUTOUT FOR ORR: After its 7-0 loss at Louisville, the Red and White responded with a convincing 3-0 win over Southwest Missouri State. One prime factor in Miami's fourth shutout this season was the play of senior netminder Kerri Orr (San Diego, Calif./Serra). Orr is now tied for tenth in a single-season at Miami with four whitewashes and is tied for ninth all-time with six career blankings.

BALANCED SCORING IS THE NAME OF THE GAME: Miami's fifth win of the season came last weekend against Southwest Missouri State, which gave the Red and White as many wins as it had in the last three seasons combined. One prime reason for the RedHawks success in 2004 is a balanced offensive attack. Five different players have scored three goals this season and a total of eight have scored at least once. With 18 goals in 2004, Miami also has already surpassed its total of 14 from last season.

CORNERS HELP FIND THE CENTER: With 91 penalty corners through 13 games this season, the Miami field hockey team is well above its final total of 71 from last year. While attacking more and gaining more corner chances, the RedHawks also have cut back on the number of penalty corners allowed. The Red and White are holding opponents to only 8.23 corners per game compared to a 10.22 rate last season.

Seven times this season the RedHawks have registered more corners than their opponent, and in those games Miami has a 5-2 mark. Likewise, Miami is 0-6 this season when its opponent has more penalty corners.
