OXFORD, Ohio - Senior Day at the Miami Turf Field resulted in a 5-0 win for the visiting Ohio Bobcats on Saturday afternoon. Four first-half goals and a 31-5 shot advantage led the Bobcats to their fifth Mid-American Conference victory of the season.
OU (7-11, 5-5 MAC) got on the board quickly when Tanja Konijn scored on a penalty corner at 8:27 in the first half. Feeding her the ball after a pass from the stickstop was Kristen Hann, earning the assist on the goal. Less than 60 seconds later the Bobcats scored again to take a 2-0 lead when Elizabeth Holtzman scored her 11th goal of the season on a centering pass from Lindsay Rothenberger.
Holtzman netted her second goal of the game at 18:59 in the first period to give OU a 3-0 lead. Once again, feeding Holtzman the ball with a shot from the left wing was Rothenberger.
Instead of getting an assist, Rothenberger added a goal at 34:21 to give the Bobcats a 4-0 lead heading into halftime. Rothenberger broke through the Miami (1-16, 0-10 MAC) defense and ripped a shot through the five-hole for her third goal of the season.
Freshman Kerri Matthews (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.), after a rough first period in net, came out on her toes in the second half and stopped eight OU shots. For the contest, Matthews made 11 saves and allowed five goals.
Ohio tallied that fifth goal, 7:06 into the second stanza, on a Maureen Casserly dunk from just in front of the net, her first goal of the season.
The Bobcats finished the game strong as Jen Cote (62:11, 2 sv) and Ashley Pitkin (7:49, 0 sv) combined for the shutout.
Miami heads to Kent State next weekend, Nov. 7-8, for the MAC Tournament. The RedHawks are the No. 6 seed in the tourney and will play at 2:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon against the No. 3 seed, which is still to be determined.
