Balanced Effort Leads Metro State Over Mesa State, 73-45

DENVER, COLO. - Four players scored in double figures to lead Metro State to a 73-45 victory over Mesa State in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's basketball game, Saturday evening at the Auraria Events Center.

Ashley Mickens had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Cassondra Bratton scored 15 points and pulled down seven boards for Metro State. Hannah Breidel was the only Maverick in double figures with 11 points, while Cassie Hutto posted nine rebounds.

Metro State led throughout the entire game and continued to push its lead during the second half as Mesa State shot just 13 percent (4-for-29) from the floor in the final 20 minutes. Metro State outrebounded the Mavericks, 51-38, and made 10 more free throws, 26-16, as it shot a season-best 81.3 percent (26-for-32) from the charity stripe.

All nine players who got in the game for Metro State played at least 10 minutes and no one played more than 33 minutes. The win broke a three-game losing streak for the Roadrunners.

Metro State led by 10 at the half, 33-23, after Mesa State shot just 29 percent (9-for-31) from the field. The two teams combined for 21 turnovers, including 11 by the Roadrunners. Mesa State forward Kelsie Gourdin picked up four fouls in the first half as she played just 15 minutes in the contest.

With the win, Metro State improves to 4-4 overall, 1-1 in the RMAC, while Mesa State drops to 1-7 overall, 0-2 in the RMAC. The Roadrunners are at CSU-Pueblo, Dec. 15.
