Adams State Upsets No. 14-ranked Metro State, 67-59

ALAMOSA, COLO. - Adams State shot 65 percent from the field and upset No. 14-ranked Metro State, 67-59, for its first win over the Roadrunners since 1999 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's basketball game, Friday evening at Plachy Hall. The Grizzlies shot 72.2 percent (13-for-18) in the second half, while holding Metro State to just 34.5 percent for the game, including 1-for-17 from three-point land in the second period. It was Adams State's first victory over the Roadrunners since Jan. 16, 1999 and the Grizzlies won their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener for the first time in five years. For Metro State, Michael Bahl scored 15 points, while Dustin Ballard added 14 and Drew Williamson chipped in with 13 points. The Roadrunners were outrebounded, 36-24 and the Grizzlies outscored Metro State in the paint, 38-22. For Adams State, Roman Moniak scored a career-high 17 points, while Wes Jensen added 14 points. Adams State led by 11 points, 50-39, midway through the second half before Metro State answered with a 9-0 run to close the lead to 50-48. However, the Grizzlies answered with a 7-0 spurt over the next two minutes to lead, 57-48. Adams State jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the first five minutes of the game before Metro State hit four of its next five shots to trail by just three, 20-17, with 11:49 to play in the half. Bahl hit a three-point basket to give the Roadrunners their first lead, 21-20, but Adams State answered back and led 32-29 at the half. With the win, Adams State improves to 3-2 overall, 1-0 in the RMAC, while Metro State falls to 3-3 overall, 0-1 in the RMAC. The Roadrunners travel to Fort Lewis Saturday evening. |
