Metro State Wins Hawaii Finale, Defeats Western New Mexico, 67-63

HILO, HAWAII - Drew Williamson scored 22 points to help lead Metro State to a 67-63 victory over Western New Mexico in the final game of the Hawaii-Hilo Shootout Sunday afternoon at Civic Auditorium. Williamson was named to the all-tournament team as the senior scored 50 points and had 14 rebounds over the three-game tournament. Dustin Ballard also had 12 points for the Roadrunners, while Williamson had seven rebounds and four assists. Willison Price pulled down a game-high 10 boards and added eight points. Metro State was down five, 37-32, with 15:55 remaining in the game but went on a 9-2 run to take a 41-39 advantage with 11:13 left to play. Western New Mexico scored seven of the next 10 points to lead, 46-44 with 9:33 in the second period but Metro State regained the lead with four straight points by Michael Bahl. Western New Mexico took one last lead, 52-51, with less than five minutes to go but a Williamson trey gave the Roadrunners back the lead, 54-52 with 4:40 left. Metro State dominated on the boards, outrebounding Western New Mexico, 40-28, and the Roadrunners shot 50 percent (26-for-52) from the floor for the game. The first half ended in a 26-26 tie. The Roadrunners scored six of the game's first eight points, but later trailed by five, 21-16, with 8:14 remaining in the period. However, Metro State scored five straight points to tie the game at 21 after a Ballard three-point bucket. The Roadrunners then led 25-22 with 3:44 to go but Western New Mexico went on a 4-1 run to end the first stanza. With the win, Metro State improves to 3-2 overall, while Western New Mexico drops to 0-6. The Roadrunners are off until Dec. 9 when they face Adams State in Alamosa for the RMAC opener.
