Sheila Hughes, Gabe Luna Lead Metro State During Final Day of RMAC Championships

ALAMOSA, COLO. - Sheila Hughes finished third in both the 100 and 200 meters, while Gabe Luna was third in the 800 meters, to lead Metro State during the final day of the RMAC Track and Field Championships, Tuesday afternoon at Rex Stadium.

"We had a good meet," said Roadrunner head coach Pete Julian. "I am proud of everyone. We had several all-conference athletes in our first outdoor championships."

Hughes ran a time of 12.0 in the 100 meters and 25.1 in the 200 meters, while Luna ran a time of 1:55.5. Both earn first team all-RMAC honors for their top-three finishes.

Adams State won both the men's and women's team titles. On the men's side, Adams State posted an RMAC Championship record 279.5 points, followed by Western State with 157 and Nebraska-Kearney with 149.5. Chadron State was fourth (100), Colorado School of Mines was fifth (88), Metro State was sixth (25) and UC-Colorado Springs was seventh (8). It is Adams State's second RMAC title in the past three years.

On the women's side, the Grizzlies scored 250 points, followed by Western State with 219.5 and Chadron State with 180.5. Nebraska-Kearney was fourth (59), Colorado School of Mines was fifth (47), UC-Colorado Springs was sixth (38) and Mesa State was seventh (26). Metro State and New Mexico Highlands tied for eighth place with 17 points. It is Adams State's fourth consecutive conference championship.

For the Roadrunner men, Todd Tolentino ran a time of 4:00.8 to finish seventh, while Anthony Luna was eighth (4:03.4) in the 1500 meters. In the 5000 meters, Chris LeBlanc ran a time of 16:41.2 to finish 13th, while Jacob Schuman was 15th and Zach Mares was 16th. Roscoe Smith was 18th and Greg Zadina finished 19th in the 800 meters.

For the women, Marjaneh Gross finished seventh in the 100 meters (12.4), while Desarae Gleason was sixth in the 1500 meters (5:07.6) and 11th in the 5000 meters (20:42.7). Also in the 5000 meters, Veronica Albo was ninth and Jessica Jenkins was 12th. Alana Pawloski finished 13th in the 800 meters (2:36.1) and Therese Panian was 14th in the 400 meters.

On the men's side, Nebraska-Kearney's Dane Tobey was the RMAC Athlete of the Meet, while James Douglas of Adams State was the RMAC Freshman of the Year. For the women, Amanda Owens of Chadron State was the RMAC Athlete of the Meet, while Renee Harris of Adams State was the Freshman of the Year. Damon Martin of Adams State and Ryan Baily of Western State were Co-Coaches of the Year for both the men and women.

Metro State competes at Western State's last chance meet this weekend.
