Sonoma State Sweeps Doubles, Defeats Metro State, 8-1
April 19, 2006
DENVER, COLO. - Sonoma State swept doubles play and went on to defeat Metro State, 8-1, in nonconference women's tennis action, Wednesday morning at the Auraria Courts. The Seawolves came out strong in doubles play, winning all three matches. Laura Robertson and Mallory Cantrell won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles, while Sonoma State's No. 1 and No. 3 teams each posted 8-4 victories. In singles play, Metro State earned a point early as Mitra Hirad won at No. 1 when her opponent retired due to injury. However, the Seawolves won the remaining five singles matches. Erin Kramer posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles, while Sonoma State lost just six games at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles combined. For Metro State, Miriam Evangelista lost the first set, 6-1, at No. 2 singles but battled hard in the second set before losing, 7-5. Evangelista was up 5-4 in the second set but Robertson held serve then won the next two games to close out the match. "Miriam played fantastic tennis in that second set," said Roadrunner head coach Dave Alden. "She showed growth in her game as she added patience to change things in that second set. She played a very solid set." With the win, Sonoma State improves to 9-7 overall, while Metro State falls to 2-18 overall. The Roadrunners conclude the regular season vs. Nebraska-Kearney tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
