Metro State Splits With UC-Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - Riley Meyer won a third-set tiebreaker to lift Metro State to a 5-4 win over UC-Colorado Springs in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tennis action, Wednesday afternoon in Colorado Springs.

Meanwhile, in the women's match, the Roadrunners lost 7-2 to the Mountain Lions.

In the men's match, UCCS jumped out on top 2-1 after doubles play as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams posted wins. Sean Voorhies and Josh Johnson upset the nation's No. 20 team of Andre Nilsson and Riley Meyer at No. 1 doubles, 8-6. Will Meyer and Sean Carlton won 8-6 at No. 3. In singles, Metro State won at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 but the Mountain Lions won at No. 1 and No. 5. The match came down to the No. 2 singles match as Riley Meyer defeated Eric Rivera in a third-set tiebreaker, 7-3, to clinch the win. It was an important regional win for Metro State as the Roadrunners are No. 6 in the North Central Region, while the Mountain Lions are No. 10.

In the women's match, the Mountain Lions led 2-1 after doubles play. Akiko Kinoshita and Ragnhild Kinoshita won at No. 3 doubles, 8-5. In singles play, UCCS won at No. 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 as only Akiko Kinoshita pulled out a win for the Roadrunners. She posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles. At No. 5 singles, Tia Mahoney won the first set and led 5-2 in the second before falling to Katelyn Towne, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.

With the win, the Metro State men improve to 11-6 overall, 3-0 in the RMAC, while the Mountain Lion men fall to 8-8 overall, 1-2 in the RMAC. The UCCS women improve to 7-8 overall, 3-0 in the RMAC, while the Roadrunner women fall to 2-15 overall, 1-2 in the RMAC. The Roadrunners host Mesa State tomorrow at noon.
