No. 30 Washburn Defeats Metro State, 8-1

TOPEKA, KAN. - No. 30-ranked Washburn swept all six singles matches and defeated Metro State, 8-1, in a nonconference women's tennis match Thursday afternoon in Topeka.

The Roadrunners trailed just 2-1 after doubles as the No. 3 team of Ragnhild Kinoshita and Akiko Kinoshita defeated Alex Rodenbeek and L. Coleman, 8-6. However, Washburn swept singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets. Akiko Kinoshita pushed Alicia Gardner to a tiebreaker in the second set at No. 6 singles before falling, 6-1, 7-6 (4).

"The No. 3 doubles match was a great one," said Roadrunner head coach Dave Alden. "Akiko and Raghnild played great. This experience will help us as we get into our conference matches."

With the loss, Metro State drops to 1-5 overall. The Roadrunners are at Emporia State and Truman State, Friday.

Metro State Men Fall to Washburn, 6-3

TOPEKA, KAN. - Metro State led 2-1 after doubles but lost five out of six singles matches and fell to Washburn, 6-3, in a nonconference men's tennis match Thursday afternoon in Topeka.

The Roadrunners got off to a good start in doubles play as the No. 2 team of Drew Machholz and Mark Milner defeated Nathan Martin and Brad Johnston, 8-6, and the No. 1 team of Andre Nilsson and Riley Meyer won, 8-6. However, Machholz was the only person to win in singles, defeating Andrew Plum at No. 3, 6-2, 6-0. The other five singles matches were all decided in straight sets.

"We put ourselves in the best position we could after doubles," said Roadrunner head coach Dave Alden. "Washburn is a solid team from top to bottom. Drew played fantastic. Riley Meyer fought back in the second set but just came up short."

With the loss, Metro State falls to 4-2 overall. The Roadrunners face Emporia State and Truman State, March 3.
