COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The Metro State men posted a 1-2 record, while the women went 1-3, at a multiple dual swimming and diving meet held at the United States Air Force Academy, Oct. 29. Four men's teams and five women's teams took part in the meet.

The Roadrunner men defeated Colorado College, 101-62, but lost to Colorado School of Mines, 137-89, and Air Force, 116-72. The women defeated Nebraska-Kearney, 105-86, but fell to Air Force, 127-60, Colorado School of Mines, 134-79, and Colorado College, 106-82.

Of the 28 swims for the men and women, 25 were faster than last week, with the remaining swims affected by the nearly 1800-foot increase in altitude. For the men, the 48-point deficit to Mines and 44-point margin to Air Force was less than the 87 and 133 points, respectively, given away in 2004. On the women's side, the 24-point difference against Colorado College was improved compared to the 74-point difference last year.

The relay teams for both the men and women stood out as the men's 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays turned in second- and first-place finishes, respectively, while dropping two seconds in each from last week at Fort Collins. The Metro State women placed second in both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays, as they cut 11 seconds and three seconds from each, respectively.

"The teams are moving in the right direction, with faster swims and more attention to detail in starts, turns and relay take-offs," said Roadrunner head coach Winthrop Dyer. "Most of our swims are placing in the top five, but a lack of numbers really hurts our overall scores. The fact that we are without divers also leaves us open to being outscored repeatedly. We are currently developing some divers, but could really use the help in this area if there are former high school athletes on campus who would be willing to join the team."

Individual highlights had freshman Kathy Lind (women) and junior transfer Nick Rice (men) each winning the 100-yard backstroke. Casey Story and Ryan Moseman finished second in the 100 yard breaststroke and 500 freestyle, as did freshman Evan Venrick in a very close 200-yard freestyle race. Rice also scored a third place in the 1000-yard freestyle, along with freshman Jake Haffner in the 100 yard butterfly.

Juniors Jessica Shaddock (50-yard freestyle) and Jessica Barrios (100-yard butterfly), and senior Becky Barrios (200-yard individual medley) all finished second. The senior Barrios joined freshman Chelsey McKinnon with third-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard freestyles.

The Roadrunners are at home during the next three weekends, Nov. 5, 12 and 19. The meets take place in the Auraria Events Center. For more information, please log on to www.gometrostate.com.
