Mercyhurst Drops Heatbreaker to Cross-town Rival Gannon

ERIE, Pa. - The Lakers lost a five-game battle against the Gannon University Golden Knights 3-2 Friday night at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center, 30-24, 28-30, 33-35, 30-27, and 12-15. Mercyhurst is now 6-15 overall and 1-12 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletice Conference. Gannon is 8-11 overall and 4-9 in the GLIAC.

In game one, Mercyhurst led wire-to-wire and by as much as 10 points. In game two, Gannon led for the first time to jump out to a 5-1 lead until Mercyhurst went on a 4-0 run to tie the game at five all. Gannon led by as many as five points at 17-12 until Mercyhurst battled back to tie the score at 23 all. The Lakers later held a 27-25 led, before Gannon came back to win 30-28.

Game three and four were tight games that bounced back and forth. Game three was one by an ace from Gannon's libero, Marcie Soltesz to win 35-33. Mercyhurst won game four 30-17.

The Lakers led game five 12-9 when Gannon went on a six-point run to win the match 15-12.

The Lakers were led by Jenna Matson with 22 kills, one ace, 14 digs, and two bolck assist for 24 points. Kristin Peterson had 15 kills and 21 digs for 15 points. Megan Fargo led the Lakers with a .379 hitting percentage (14-3-29), four digs, and one block assist four 14.5 points. Cara Nelson had a career-high to lead the Lakers with 47 digs. Julia Butler handed out a career-high 66 assists.

The Golden Knights were led by Jessica Santavy with 19 kills, two digs, two block solos, and three block assists for 22.5 points. Katie Flower had 16 kills, one assist, one ace, and 26 digs for 17 points. Maire Prybyl doled out 46 assists and Katie Flower had 26 digs.

Up next for the Lakers is next weekend at Ashland on Friday, October 20 and Findlay on Saturday, October 21.
