Lakers Split Two on First Day of Mercyhurst Invitational

Mercyhurst swept Wilmington (DE) in three games in its opening match at the Mercyhurst Invitational, before falling in a five-game see-saw battle against Lake Superior State.  The loss was Mercyhurst's first of the year, snapping its five match win streak.

Mercyhurst took its first match of the tournament in three games, winning 30-19, 30-24 and 30-25.  The Lakers established themselves early in the match, notching seven aces against the Wildcats in the first game.

Lauren Kubinski tallied 15 points to lead the Lakers.  The sophomore had kills and three blocks.  Kristin Peterson had 11 points on nine kills and two aces.  Megan Fargo hit .545 in the match with seven kills in 11 attempts. 

Cara Nelson notched 16 digs.  Christine Nisbet had two kills and two blocks.  Julie McConaughy had three aces. 

Julia Butler and Teri Rhodes split time at setter.  Rhodes had 12 assists in game one, Butler finished the match with 23 over the final two games.

Mercyhurst hit .340 in the match, compared to just .097 for the Wildcats.

Lake Superior State 3, Mercyhurst 2
Mercyhurst and Lake Superior State battled back and forth before LSSU outlasted the 'Hurst in five games, 30-24, 24-30, 25-30, 30-28, 15-13.

After dropping game one, Mercyhurst rebounded to take the next two before Lake Superior won games four and five to take the match.

Jenna Matson led Mercyhurst in the loss with 24.5 points on 21 kills, three aces and a block.  She also had 16 digs.  Christine Nisbet had 17.5 points on 10 kills, four aces and five blocks.  Kristen Peterson had 15 kills, an ace and a block for 16.5 points.  She added 14 digs.  Megan Fargo 12 kills and five blocks for 14.5 points.  Lauren Kubinski's 11 kills andd four blocks gave her 13 points in the match. 

Teri Rhodes dished out a career-high 60 assists in the match.  Cara Nelson had 32 digs.

Ashley Wyers had 16 kills and eight blocks to lead LSSU with 21.5 points. 

Mercyhurst hit .486 in game two with 18 kills and just one error in 35 attacks.  For the match, the team hit .267, while LSSU checked in at just .175.

The Lakers will look to get back into the win column with a pair of matches on Saturday.  Mercyhurst plays Saginaw Valley at 10:00 AM, then completes play at the Mercyhurst Invitational with a match against Drury at 2:30 PM.
