Lakers Almost Upset Division I St. Bonaventure
Oct. 15, 2006
Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst women's tennis team had its chances to notch a victory against NCAA Division I St. Bonaventure, but the Lakers came up just a bit short in a 6-3 loss Sunday. While Mercyhurst was helped by a pair of forfeits, the Lakers were still in almost every match and had opportunities to win most of them. Because St. Bonaventure had just five players, the Lakers were awarded victories at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. Mercyhurst trailed 2-1 after doubles play although the Lakers could have easily been up 3-0. Both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches went to tiebreaks with St. Bonaventure getting a 9-8 (10-8) win at the top and a 9-8 (7-5) win at No. 2. With the forfeit at No. 6 singles, the match was tied 2-2 with five singles matches to play. Jaclyn McLean rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles but St. Bonaventure won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles to keep the match even at 3-3. After Meghan Raynor lost a tight 6-4, 6-4 match at No. 4 singles, the Lakers needed victories from both Jennifer Daly at No. 1 and Elizabeth Mullane at No. 3. Both players won their opening sets but Daly ended up losing 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 and Mullane was beaten 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-4. Mercyhurst, now 8-7, will have almost two weeks off before taking part in the GLIAC Championships in Midland, Mich. October 27-28. |
