Doubles Play Helps Lakers Get Back Into Win Column
Sept. 22, 2007
Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst women's tennis team swept doubles play and set the tone for the squad's GLIAC match against Ferris State Saturday as the Lakers rolled to a 7-2 victory. The victory was Mercyhurst's first win over Ferris State in program history. The win came a day after Mercyhurst's unbeaten streak came to an end. The Lakers had won five straight matches, including a pair of conference tilts, before Grand Valley State defeated Mercyhurst 8-1 Friday. But the Lakers dominated doubles play and won a pair of three-set singles matches. Jaclyn McLean and Meghan Raynor had the easiest time in doubles, winning 8-1 at No. 2. Elizabeth Mullane and Christine Mersch won 8-3 at No. 3 and Jennifer Daly and Kim Ezzo won 8-4 at No. 1. With a 3-0 lead heading into singles play, Mercyhurst wrapped up the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win from Ezzo at No. 2 and a 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 win from Raynor at No. 4. Both McLean and Mullane won their opening sets, dropped the second set, and then closed out matches with a third-set victory. McLean's scores were 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 while Mullane won 6-4, 3-6, 6-0. Now 6-1 on the year and 3-1 in GLIAC play, Mercyhurst will host two more conference opponents for Homecoming Weekend. The Lakers welcome Findlay to Westwood Racquet Club Friday at 3:00 p.m. before playing Wayne State Saturday at 10:00 a.m. |
