Lakers Bounce Ashland In GLIAC Match
Sept. 17, 2006
Ashland, Ohio - Despite playing singles without No. 1 player Jennifer Daly, the Mercyhurst women's tennis team dropped just three sets on the way to an 8-1 victory over Ashland University in GLIAC action Sunday.
After a long weekend at the ITA Regional Tournament in which Daly played four matches in two days and became the first Laker in school history to advance to the quarterfinals, Mercyhurst coach Ray Yost rested his top player in singles and pushed the rest of the lineup up a spot. And the rest of the team stepped up.
After the team swept all three doubles matches to build a 3-0 lead heading into singles play, the Lakers lost only three sets the rest of the way. Filling in at the No. 1 spot, Jamie Sutyak bounced back from a 6-2 loss in the opening set to defeat Katherine Goudy 7-5, 10-8 in a third set super tiebreak.
Meghan Raynor had little trouble in a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 and Elizabeth Mullane cruised 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3. Chelsea Downing had a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4 and Jaclyn McLean blanked her opposition in a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6.
Mercyhurst has now won two dual matches in a row to improve to 3-2 on the season, including a 2-1 record in GLIAC competition. The Lakers will play at Allegheny Tuesday at 4 p.m. before playing six consecutive conference matches. |
