Lakers Slam St. Vincent For Unbeaten Opening Weekend

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst women's tennis team swept doubles play for the second consecutive day and finished its opening weekend with an 8-1 win over St. Vincent Monday at Westwood Racquet Club to remain undefeated on the year. The Lakers cruised through doubles play, dropping just six games along the way. Jennifer Daly and Kim Ezzo won 8-3 at No. 1 while Jaclyn McLean and Meghan Raynor won 8-2 at No. 2. Doubles specialist Christine Mersch and Kelton Macke won 8-1 at No. 3. In singles play, Mercyhurst's freshmen continued to shine and the Lakers swept the top five spots. Daly won 6-2, 6-4 at the top spot and the next four athletes in the singles lineup all completed 4-0 weekends with straight set victories. Ezzo won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2, while McLean won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3. Raynor picked up an identical 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 4 and Macke won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5. Now 2-0 on the year, Mercyhurst will begin its final year in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) this weekend. The Lakers will travel to Michigan's upper peninsula to play Michigan Tech at 1:00 p.m. Friday before a match with Lake Superior State at 11:00 a.m. Saturday. |
