Lakers Prevail Despite Mother Nature

Oct. 30, 2006

Columbus, Ohio - The Mercyhurst Rowing Team concluded their fall season at The Jack Speakmon Memorial Regatta in Columbus Ohio. A very fast current from recent rain combined with very high winds provided a long grueling day to be outside. Despite the elements the Mercyhurst Rowing team put in some excellent end of season performances. All the Mercyhurst boats competed well moving through their respective field of competitors over the five kilometer course. At the end of the day the Lakers finished with two golds, two silvers and one bronze medal.

In the men's varsity pair, the Boyd brothers Brandon (senior-captain) and Kurt (sophomore) confidently rowed through the top seeded boat from the University of Michigan to win by over 30 seconds.

A young women's varsity four consisting of freshmen Abbey Celarek and Annie Schiller and sophomores Chelsea Bushby and Ali Bogart were led by senior captain Naomi Petendra as they easily handled the competition, passing seven crews. Their closest rival from Miami University were over 45 seconds behind.

Silver medals were the won in the mens open double by senior captain Jeremy Ivey and Junior Bob Paterson. They were defeated by Cincinnati in the closest results of the day 0.29 of a second. The varsity men's four of juniors Tony Dorchak, Andrew Chapman and Adam Grady, freshman Stan Kostic and coxswain Michele Handzel, won a silver medal behind University of Michigan.

The last medal of the day was won by the men's novice four, taking the bronze medal behind Miami University.
