The second-ranked Mercyhurst women's hockey team was put to the test Friday night against visiting Boston University before prevailing, 6-5, before 520 fans at the Ice Center. The Lakers are 4-0-0 for the first time in team history while the Terriers dropped to 0-2-1.

The Lakers' shutout streak ended just four minutes into the first period as Melissa Anderson scored on the power play. MC tied the game two minutes later on a man-advantage tally by Hayley McMeekin. Mercyhurst took a 4-1 lead on goals from Valerie Chouinard towards the end of the first period and second-period tallies by Geena Prough and Melissa Dianoski.

BU scored four unanswered to take its second lead of the contest, at 5-4, at the 4:40 minute mark of the third period. The game tyer came just 15 seconds left before the second intermission. But Valerie Chouinard scored twice to lead the Lakers. It was her first hat trick of the season, her first since an 8-0 blanking at Wayne State on Jan. 12, 2007, and the third of her career.

Laura Hosier started between the pipes for Mercyhurst and made seven saves on 11 shots in 40 minutes. Courtney Drennen made eight out of nine saves to earn the win. She is 2-0-0 this season and remains unbeaten in her collegiate career at 16-0-2. The Terriers' Melissa Haber made 29 saves.

BU was 4-for7 on the power play, while Mercyhurst was 3-for-5. It was the first time ever that Mercyhurst allowed four power-play goals.

The game was Skate for the Cure, which all proceeds went to breast cancer research and awareness.

The same teams will meet Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
