Meghan Agosta

#2 Mercyhurst Blanks Robert Morris 3-0

Oct. 2, 2007

Stats

Moon Twp, Pa. - All-America Meghan Agosta was blanked last year in Mercyhurst's 5-2 season-opening win at Maine. She went on from there to lead Division I in scoring and become a Patty Kazmaier Award finalist as a freshman. Agosta wasted no time in getting her team off and running in the new season by scoring twice in a 3-0 College Hockey America win at Robert Morris Tuesday night. It was the season-opener for both teams.

After a scoreless first period, Agosta got the only goal the Lakers would need when she beat RMU netminder Brianne McLaughlin just nine seconds into the middle frame. She had help from linemates Vicki Bendus and Stephanie Jones. For Bendus, it was her first collegiate point. The marker stretched Agosta's goal-scoring streak to four games and her point-scoring streak to nine dating to last season. Senioir winger Jackie Jarrell made it 2-0 later in the period with help from senior Kristen Erickson. Jarrell had only three lamplighters last season. Her first goal didn't come until December 9 in a 3-0 win at Robert Morris.

Agosta completed the scoring with a shorthanded, empty net goal late in the third. Junior Valerie Chouinard picked up the assist.

Senior Laura Hosier picked up her 54th career win between the pipes by stopping all eleven RMU shots. McLaughlin, the game's third star behind Agosta and Jarrell, stopped 39 of 41. The Lakers finished 0 for 5 on the power play while the Colonials were 0 of 4.

Mercyhurst improved to 11-0 lifetime against RMU and won for the 5th time in 9 season-openers.

Mercyhurst will begin the home portion of the regular season Friday and Saturday with games against Maine at 7:00pm and 2:00pm at the Ice Center. Maine began its season last Saturday with a 6-1 win over visiting Sacred Heart. The Black bears feature former Mercyhurst players Robyn Law, Alexandra Hoffmeyer, and Ashley Palangi on their roster. Former Mercyhurst violunteer assistant, Sara Simard, is the assistant coach.
