Shippensburg overpowers Lakers

Sept. 3, 2005

Erie, Pa. - Shippensburg scored three goals in 55 seconds early in the second half to break open a 4-2 game as the Raiders defeated Mercyhurst 7-2.

Kristen Miller scored three goals for Shippensburg, who remained undefeated at 4-0. The Lakers fell to 1-4 on the season.

The three clinching goals were part of a 10 minute stretch that saw the two teams combine for five goals. Ship started the string with a goal, before Lauren McEllven answered with her Mercyhurst-leading fifth goal of the season to cut the Raider lead to 4-2 at 42:27. The Raiders then put the game away with a flurry starting at 50:14. When it was over, Mercyhurst trailed 7-2.

In the first half, Shippensburg jumped up 1-0, but Haley Brochu's second goal of the season knotted the score at 6:23. The Raiders led at the half, 3-1.

Julie Smith and Jen Macri split time in cage for the Lakers. Smith went the first 50:31, making seven saves. Macri played the final 19:29, allowing one goal and making two saves.

Mercyhurst will return to action on September 11, when they host Bloomsburg at 11:00 AM.
