Mercyhurst Rallies To Defeat Penn State Behrend 11-9 In Overtime
Sept. 14, 2005
Erie, Pa. - Zach Bell's goal with only five seconds left in regulation forced overtime and Mercyhurst went on from there to defeat Penn State Behrend 11-9 at the Behrend campus. The Lakers squared their record at 2-2 in playing their first College Water Polo Association (CWPA) game of the season. It was the second straight overtime success for the Lakers, who trimmed Queens College 9-7 Sunday at Princeton. The game was tied at one after a quarter and at three at halftime before the Lions opened a 5-3 lead after three periods. The Lakers closed to within 7-6, but seemed destined for defeat before Bell's dramatic lamplighter. Mercyhurst opened a 10-8 lead in the first half of the extra session and each team scored once down the stretch. Goaltender Patrick Staab went all the way for the Lakers and made nine saves. Mercyhurst will visit Slippery Rock Saturday afternoon, September 17.
