Laker Water Polo Wins Two, Drops One at Princeton Invitational

Princeton, N.J. - The Mercyhurst men's water polo team completed day one at the Princeton Invitational with a 2-1 record, that included an overtime victory over Iona and a 13-5 win over Queens (N.Y.). After Mercyhurst earned wins in its first two games, the team suffered its first loss of the season at the hands No. 15-ranked team in Division I, Princeton, by a 14-7 count. In three games, Kevin Riordan totaled four goals, four assists, three drawn ejections to the lead the Lakers, which is off to its best start in school history and is currently ranked 10th in the most recent CWPA poll. Jake Coin totaled 12 steals in the three games. In the weekend opener, The Lakers and Division I Iona stood tied at 3-3 at the end of regulation. The teams traded goals to start the extra session, but Riordan drew a penalty shot and Ryan Speers converted with his only goal of the game, giving Mercyhurst a 5-4 lead and the eventual victory. The Lakers cruised in the second game of the day, jumping out to a 10-4 lead after three quarters and tacking on three more in the fourth. Jake Coin and Speers each tallied three goals, and Alex Moggridge and Andrew Schonoff each scored a pair. Coin also added four steals, while Alex Perry and Jorge Montero totaled three apiece. Andy Sekulski recorded the win in goal by making 10 saves and recording two assists and two steals. Riordan, Speers and Moggridge all scored two goals in the nightcap against Princeton, but the nationally-ranked Tigers scored seven goals in the first half and added seven more in the second to pull away. Moggridge also totaled a team-high three steals. The Lakers challenge No. 13 Bucknell Sunday afternoon at the Princeton Invitational. |
