Lakers Fall to Rutgers-Newark in Four

ERIE, Pa. - Dave Newman registered 15 kills against just one error, but Rutgers-Newark got the best of Mercyhurst in four games at the MAC. Game scores were 30-22, 30-19, 25-30, 30-26. Game one was tied at 16-16 before the Scarlet Raiders closed with a 14-6 run to take early control in the match. After Rutgers-Newark (2-3) took a 30-19 final in game two, Mercyhurst (0-5) rebounded in game three. After trailing 5-4, back-to-back kills by Newman gave Mercyhurst the lead for good as the Lakers claimed the 30-25 final. Game four looked promising in the early going, with Mercyhurst jumping out to a 6-1 lead, powered by a pair of aces by setter David Hatten. The Scarlet Raiders eventually tied things at 9-9 and after grabbing an 11-10 lead, never trailed again to win the match. Newman hit .583 in the match, had two blocks and 16 points to lead Mercyhurst. Joe Montroy added 13 points and 12 kills. Tim Wagner added 13 kills and 14 points, and Mike Palaschak had nine kills and four blocks for 11 points. Hatten dished out 47 assists, served up both Mercyhurst aces and had two kills in three attacks. Eric Honsberger led all players with 24 kills and 28 points. He also had four blocks. Nate Stott added 18 kills. Setter Mark Hulse also had a big match with 46 assists, eight kills, four aces and three blocks. Meercyhurst hosts Juniata on Sunday, January 28 at 1:00 PM. |
