Mercyhurst Falls to Undefeated Lewis in MIVA Opener

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Mercyhurst ran into a resurgent Lewis team in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) opener for both squads, falling in three games. Game scores were 30-28, 30-16, 30-20.

Tim Wagner led the Lakers with 13 kills in the match and also notched a team-high 14.5 points.

Dave Newman and David Hatten each had five blocks. Newman finished with 10.5 points, while Hatten dished out 31 assists.

Mercyhurst led by as many as four in the first game, 19-15 after a Wagner kill and still led as late as 24-23 after an error by the Flyers, but Lewis regrouped to take the game.

Jared Dayton paced Lewis with 19 kills and 20.5 points. David Taylor, 25 assists, and Jordan Vidovic, 15 assists, split time at setter.

Both teams registered 18 blocks. The Flyers are 4-0 after the match after winning just 10 matches in all of 2006.

Lewis out-hit the Lakers .396 to .182.

Mercyhurst will look for its first win of the year as the Lakers travel to Loyola Chicago on Saturday, January 20.
