Mercyhurst Jumps Past Eagles 1-0

Oct. 14, 2007

Box Score

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst men's soccer team picked up another key GLIAC win with a 1-0 victory over Ashland on Sunday. With this win and the Lakers win over Findlay on Friday, Mercyhurst have a better opportunity at making the trip to the GLIAC championship final four in a few weeks. Ashland falls to 0-13-1 with the loss and 0-5-1 in conference play. Mercyhurst moves up to 7-7-2 overall and 5-4-0 in the GLIAC.

Sophomore Kurt Young scored the Lakers only goal in the 39th minute when he hit a perfect volley into the upper corner of the net off of a pass from fellow forward Billy Colton.

In a rare occasion, Mercyhurst was out-shot 26-19 by the Ashland Eagles. The Eagles also held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Junior Daniel Mudd had a spectacular day in the net with 12 saves. Ashland had many opportunities but they were constantly denied by Mudd.

The Lakers look to keep their momentum as they embark on the last three games of the season. Mercyhurst will first face Ohio Dominican on Saturday. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
