Laker Shutout Streaks Rolls On Against Kentucky Wesleyan
Sept. 17, 2006
Owensboro, Ky. - Tyler Emerick broke open a scoreless tie on a goal with seven seconds left in the first half and the Mercyhurst men's soccer team posted its sixth consecutive shutout with a 4-0 win over Kentucky Wesleyan Sunday.
The first of Emerick's two goals on the match opened the floodgates for the Lakers, now 7-1 on the year. Kurt Young scored the first of his two goals less than 10 minutes into the second half and Emerick added another score 15 minutes after that. Finally, Young closed out the scoring with his second goal four minutes later.
Daniel Mudd and Shane Hoyne combined on the shutout in goal, Mercyhurst's sixth consecutive. Mudd has posted four of the shutouts himself and has shared time with Hoyne in two of the others. The shutout streak is the longest for the team since equaling the mark in 1985.
Mercyhurst held a 21-9 advantage in shots, holding Kentucky Wesleyan to only four shots on goal. The Lakers also had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Mercyhurst will try to keep its six match shutout streak going Wednesday when the Lakers travel across town to face rival Gannon for a 7 p.m. Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match. Mercyhurst leads the GLIAC with a 2-0 record, while Gannon is one game back at 1-1. |
