Jan. 18, 2007

Box Score

ERIE, Pa. - Shelby Chaney set career-highs by going 13-of-16 from the foul line and T.J. Mathis grabbed a career-best eight rebounds to power Mercyhurst to a 70-65 win over Ferris State at the MAC.

The Lakers went to the free throw line 43 times as a team and made 34 (79 percent).

Chaney finished with a team-high 17 points. Terry Smith came off the bench to score 16 points, including 6-of-6 on free throws. In addition to his career-high in rebounds, Mathis scored 13 points. Richard Field added a dozen.

Ferris State took a 17-16 lead with 8:16 left in the half, but Mercyhurst closed the opening 20 minutes with a 16-6 run to take a 33-22 lead into the half. The Lakers limited the Bulldogs to just 2-of-7 shooting and seven turnovers.

Mercyhurst built the lead to as many as 13, 42-29, after a Chaney lay up with 13:38 left in the game, but a Jessie York jumper with 7:17 to play started a 7-0 run that cut the lead to 54-50 with 6:14 to go.

A lay up by C.J. Van Wieren cut the lead to just three, 63-60, with 1:45 left. The Lakers hit 6-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Terrance Shaw, who scored his 1,000th point in the game, led Ferris State with 23 points and 10 rebounds. York came off the pine to score 15, and Michael Daniels pitched in with 10.

The win snapped a two-game skid for the Lakers. Mercyhurst remained in fourth place in the GLIAC South. The Lakers are just a game behind second place Ashland and a half game behind third place Wayne State.

Mercyhurst hosts Lake Superior State on Saturday, January 20 at 3:00 PM.
