Alex Perry, Men's water polo
The Mercyhurst men's water polo team opened its 2007 campaign at the Navy Labor Day Open and earned a regular season victory over Queens (N.Y.) on Sunday, which followed exhibition wins over Pacifi c B and Lindenwood. Junior Alex Perry, a junior college All-American at Grossmont a year ago, led the team with fi ve goals, two assists and a steal in the win over Queens. In a pair of exhibition matches, he totalled seven goals, two steals, one assist and a draw ejection.

Female Athlete of the Week
Jenna Matson, Women's volleyball
Jenna Matson was named Mercyhurst Tournament MVP after totaling 49 kills, 13 service aces and 33 digs in four matches this weekend. Matson, as captain, led her team to a 4-0 fi nish on the weekend and the Mercyhurst Invitational title. Matson has 100 kills on the year and averages just over three a game.

The Mercyhurst women's volleyball team continued its hot start to the 2007 season, improving to 6-1 with victories over W.Va. Wesleyan and Seton Hill to open day one of the Mercyhurst Invitational on Friday evening. The Mercyhurst women's volleyball team ran its winning streak to five on Saturday with victories over Holy Family and W.Va. Wesleyan, capping a 4-0 weekend and a fi rst-place fi nish at the Mercyhurst Invitational. With Saturday's two victories, the Lakers improve to 8-1 on the season, already topping the previous season's win total of seven. Junior Jenna Matson, sophomore Julia Butler, junior Lauren Kubinski and freshman Kendall Ashworth were all named to the all-tournament team.
