This Week: The University of Memphis volleyball team will travel to Kent, Ohio for four matches in the Kent State Tournament. Memphis opens the tournament at 10 a.m. on Friday against La Salle. They return later that evening to face Robert Morris at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, Memphis is paired up with Cornell at 3 p.m., and closes tournament action at 7:30 p.m. against host Kent State. The Tigers head into the tournament with a 3-0 record after winning the UNC Asheville Tournament last weekend. This is the first time since the 1998 season that Memphis has opened with a 3-0 record.
The Series: This will be the first meeting for the Tigers against all four of the teams they will face in the Kent State Tournament. Three of the five teams in the tournament opened their seasons last week with tournament titles including Kent State (3-0), Robert Morris (3-0) and Memphis (3-0). LaSalle finished in second place of their tournament with a 3-1 record, and Cornell has not placed yet this season.
Last Week: Head Coach Carrie Yerty picked up her seventh career tournament title with a 3-0 run in the UNC Asheville Tournament last weekend. Memphis defeated host Asheville, South Alabama and Morehead State as all three matches were decided by three games. Senior Amie Hamilton was named the tournament MVP and senior Ginger Garrett was honored to t he all-tournament team. Hamilton averaged 11 assists and 1.5 service aces in the nine games of the tournament, while Garrett totaled 34 kills and 37 digs in the tourney.
Coming Up: The Tigers will complete their regular-season tournament action next weekend in the Florida Atlantic Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla. The tournament will feature FAU, Memphis, Youngstown State and North Carolina State. Memphis will have two other single matches on the road before opening their home schedule at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse against Houston on Sept. 23.
