MEMPHIS, Tenn. -
The University of Memphis women's tennis team improved to 11-5 overall with a 6-1 victory over SIU-Carbondale, Saturday morning. The Lady Tigers will wrap up their March homestand with a non-conference match against Troy State this afternoon in a doubleheader with The U of M men's tennis team.
With just two home matches remaining on the schedule, the Lady Tigers have already doubled their win total from last season after they went 5-16 with a six-player roster.
Memphis opened by easily sweeping the doubles point. The No. 1 doubles team of Sabrina Lindemann and Monica Gonzalez-Gordo won their match, 8-1, while the No. 2 team of Sumitra Rao and Marlene Dirnstorfer improved to 9-2 on the season with an 8-0 win. The Salukis did not field a No. 3 doubles team and had to forfeit the match in the team score.
In singles play, Memphis won all but the No. 3 singles match to pick up their 11th win of the season. SIU-Carbondale forfeited the No. 5 and 6 singles matches and Jessica Knitter defeated Viktoria Gruber at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8, to score SIU-C's only point of the match.
Memphis is facing Troy State at the HPER Courts this afternoon. The Lady Tigers have already won the doubles point and are currently in singles action as of 3:30 p.m. (CST).
Memphis will hit the road for a three-match swing through Florida beginning Mar. 27th. Memphis will play at Rollins College, the No. 8 team in the country in NCAA Division II, the 27th at 3:30 p.m. (EST). The Lady Tigers will follow that match with a C-USA contest at South Florida, the 30th at 1 p.m. (EST) and will finish the road swing at the University of Central Florida the 31st at 1 p.m. Memphis will return home to finish its home stand against Auburn-Montgomery, the No. 2 women's team in the NAIA, Apr. 3rd at 2:30 p.m. That will mark the final home match for seniors Sabrina Lindemann, Sumitra Rao and Monica Gonzalez-Gordo. Memphis will finish its regular season schedule at Arkansas State, Apr. 8th at 2 p.m.
