MEMPHIS, TENN. - After opening the season with a loss at Ole Miss, the University of Memphis Lady Tigers basketball team rebounded with a 93-67 win over Austin Peay State to even their record at 1-1. A solid all-around effort was the key in tonight's game as four Lady Tigers scored in double figures.
Junior forward Kelly Herron led the way shooting 6-for-11, finishing with 15 points and also dishing out six assists in 25 minutes of play. Sophomore forward Melissa Abraham, was near-perfect from the field, going 5-for-6 and ending up with 15 points while grabbing a team-high six boards within 24 minutes of action.
Senior point guard Yolanda Reed, went to the charity stripe nine times before the night was over and scored 12points while snagging four steals, as well. Sophomore forward Malissa Bush, added 10 points, collected five rebounds and was perfect from the line going 2-for-2.
Leading the charge for the Austin Peay State Lady Govs., was Quin Sullivan who ended up with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. Also chipping in were Brooke Armstead and Tiffany McCarley who added 11 and 13 points, respectively.
Memphis shot better than 50 percent from the field and 68 percent from the line on the night. While the Lady Govs., shot 39 percent from the field and 60 percent from the line, in a losing effort on the road.
The Lady Tigers will return to action this Friday when they welcome Samford, Rice and Providence to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse for the 15th annual Lady Tiger Classic. Memphis will open the tournament on Friday in a 6 p.m. meeting with Providence College. Samford and Rice will follow that match-up at approximately 8 p.m. The losers of the two games on Friday will play in the consolation game on Saturday at 3 p.m., and the winners will meet in the championship game at 5 p.m. The Lady Tigers have won the tournament the last seven straight years.
