Junior Princess Swilley made five three throws in the final 40 seconds for the University of Memphis to secure a 64-58 upset over 20th-ranked DePaul in women's basketball action Sunday at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
The Lady Tigers (9-9, 2-3 C-USA) never trailed en route to their third-consecutive win and second-straight in Conference USA play. It was the Lady Tigers' first win over a ranked opponent since Nov. 21, 2000 when they defeated #15 Mississippi State, 88-82.
Senior Shannon Hamp led all scorers with 20 points while Swilley chipped in 17. Hamp has scored 20 or more points in seven games this season.
Memphis raced out to a 10-0 run in the game's opening four minutes and extended its lead to 21-4 by the 11:04 mark in the first half. Junior Jordie Joso had eight points and a pair of rebounds and assists during that stretch to lift the Lady Tigers to their early lead.
Soso went to the bench with two fouls The Blue Demons (14-6, 3-2 C-USA) struggled from the floor early making just one of their first eight attempts before going on a 17-6 run that cut the Memphis lead to 27-21 with 3:34 remaining in the half.
The Lady Tigers however regained a 13-point advantage at the break with a 9-2 run to close the half. Memphis shot 60 percent from the field in the opening half making 15-of-25 attempts and outrebounded DePaul 17-8. The Lady Tigers held DePaul to just 36.8 percent shooting in the first half (8-for-22) and 37.7 percent for the game
DePaul got to within four points on three occasions in the second half as Memphis cooled off from the floor, but the Blue Demons could not get any closer. The Lady Tigers knocked down clutch free throws down the stretch and for the game were 13-of-16 from the free throw line.
A jumper by Jenni Dant with 3:32 remaining cut the Memphis lead to 58-54, but that would be the last field goal by either team. The teams traded free throws the rest of the game with Memphis hitting eight from the stripe and DePaul hitting four.
Ashley Luke led the visitors with 16 points. Soso finished the contest with 12 points and five rebounds.
Memphis takes to the road next weekend when they travel to Charlotte and East Carolina. Memphis is looking to snap a nine-game road C-USA losing streak dating back to last season.
