Tiger senior defender Chris Schmidt and freshmen midfielder Dayton O'Brien received more postseason honors as the duo was named to the NSCAA/adidas All-Midwest Region Third Team.
Schmidt, who captained the Tiger soccer squad in both of his final campaigns received his third postseason honor. The Clarksville, Tenn. native anchored the Memphis defense for the past three seasons, starting in each of the last 51 matches he has appeared in dating back to his freshman year. As a senior, Schmidt tallied nine points on two goals and five assists for the Tigers. Schmidt scored the game-winning goal to power Memphis past conference foe East Carolina and posted multi-assist performances on two occasions enroute to being named to the Verizon Academic All-District IV team and earning Second Team All-C-USA recognition.
O'Brien, a native Memphian, enjoyed a solid freshman campaign, leading the Memphis squad with seven assists. He also ranked in the C-USA top -10 in shots and assists per game. The first-year midfielder saw action in all 18 matches this year, including 15 starts at the left midfield position. O'Brien scored 13 points on the year, tallying three goals along with his team-high seven assists. His first career proved to be the game-winner in Memphis's 3-2 conference-opener against TCU and he assisted on Schmidt's game-winning score in a 2-1 defeat of East Carolina.The ECS product also garnered multi-point performances twice, scoring a goal and adding an assist in back-to-back Tiger wins over Northeastern and Lipscomb. In addition, O'Brien was named C-USA Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 3.
Memphis finished the season with a 2-1 win on the road in Charlotte to improve their 2002 record to 10-7-1. The 10-win season was the 13th time the Tigers have reached double-digits in the win column.
