The University of Memphis men's soccer team continues its Conference USA schedule at home this weekend against South Carolina (4-5-1) on Friday at 7 p.m. and then on Sunday hosting East Carolina (0-7-1) at 1 p.m. Both games will take place at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
The Tigers enter conference play 0-1-1 after tying No. 17 Tulsa, 1-1, and losing in a heartbreaker at SMU, 2-1. The Tigers will look to snap a five-game winless streak that began after Memphis won its first four games. Senior forward Andy Metcalf leads the Tigers in goals with seven and leads C-USA in shots, shots per game, and points per game and is tied for the lead in goals and goals per game. Sophomore Tyler Strom has come on strong since getting the starting nod in goal last weekend and leads the conference in league games in saves per game and is tied for the lead in save percentage. Despite only scoring two goals in two games last week, the Tigers are still ranked third in the nation in scoring, averaging just over three goals per game.
The Gamecocks enter the weekend after beating East Carolina 5-2 in their inaugural C-USA game. USC has won four straight after losing their first five games of the season. The Gamecocks were picked fourth in the conference preseason poll behind Memphis, Tulsa and SMU. South Carolina is led by senior midfielder Josh Alcala who has two goals and five assists for nine points and leading scorer, junior forward Ayo Akinsete with four goals and one assist for nine points. Friday's meeting is the first between the two schools.
East Carolina has started the season slow with a 0-7-1 record and are 0-1 in conference games. The Pirates are led by junior forward Calvin Simon's four goals and no assists for eight points and senior forward Matt Kawaleski who has three goals and no assists for six points. East Carolina was picked to finish last in the C-USA preseason poll. This is the fifth meeting between the Tigers and the Pirates, and Memphis lead the series with a 3-0-1 record against ECU.
Ticket prices for the games are $5 for adults, $3 for youth, and free admission forchildren under three. U of M students get in free with their student ID. All children wearing soccer jerseys get into the game free. All fans are invited to bring any can foods that they would like to donate for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
